Matapuna Training Centre was established by Dr Kevin Makin, in 1989. As a result of the closure of several factories in Gisborne, a large number of adults in the region became unemployed or were made redundant and found themselves in the position of having to retrain. Matapuna Training Centre’s original programmes aimed to close these skill gaps and retrain adult workers for new employment by developing computing skills. Over time, Matapuna extended to youth and community programmes and diversified their courses by providing training in Art, Music, Beauty Therapy, Hair Dressing, and computing. Matapuna transitioned from Youth Training to Youth Guarantee in 2013 and currently runs courses for students ranging in age from 14-24 years. The training centre is administered by a charitable trust (the Matapuna Trust) and currently has five trustees: Mike Eriksen (Chairman), Tim Marshall, Maewa Para, Rose Lardelli, and Erin Jones. If students meet our criteria, courses at Matapuna are FREE!
